Designing a Family Bathroom

Your family bathroom will be a very busy room at certain times of the day and if you have children it’s very easy for your bathroom to become cluttered in no time at all. Bathrooms are typically small but they need to be able to pact a lot in such as a bath / shower, a toilet, and a sink. Then there’s the need for bathroom storage, especially for his and hers bathroom products and the kids bath toys.

With care planning is easy to make the most out of your bathroom and your first priority should be storage. This is where most people designing a bathroom fail to get the look that they want as they’ve already picked out their bathroom suite without taking proper measurements and looking at the room as a whole, not just do we move the bath, toilet and sink?

Once you’ve made proper measurements of your family bathroom, look at any awkward dead spaces. It could be possible to build a small cupboard and turn that dead bathroom space into a useful one. If you decide to go with this option then try to blend in the colour of the cupboard doors and have them without handles, the bathroom cupboard will be less noticeable then. Don’t forget you can buy buy counter top basins enabling you to store many of your bathroom products under the sink.

A double ended bath is fantastic for a family bathroom as it stops the children arguing about who will sit at the tap end when they are young enough to share their bath times, by placing the taps on the wall it will free up some more space and help prevent the little ones from accidentally burning themselves on the tap. It will also give your bathroom a luxury grown up feel even though it is a family bathroom.

For a family bathroom the best wall and floor coverings are tiles, the bigger the better as larger bathroom tiles will help the space to feel larger. They are also wipe - clean for when the children smear toothpaste along the walls. If covering the entire room in bathroom tiles to expensive consider tiling half way up your bathroom wall and painting the rest in a special bathroom paint.
